HemHem (or Cai — pronounced Kay — of Turbansk, his formal Bard name, which he refuses to use) is Maerad’s younger brother and is about thirteen years old. When their parents were murdered in the sack of Pellinor, Hem was stolen by the Hulls and placed in an orphanage. He too, it is revealed, has a part to play in the prophecy. Hem is more scarred than Maerad by his traumatic childhood, anduntil he discovers that he is a healer, he is not comfortable with his vocation of Barding: unlike Maerad, he is not at all studious. Like Maerad, Hem is fiercely loyal and very stubborn.
